Are there good reasons to resist efforts to revise God's design for marriage?

In God's plan, husband and wife secure their mating relationship for life, becoming "one flesh." Last week, New York decided to recognize non-mating homosexual relationships as fictitious marriage. A common argument for fictitious marriage is that there is no good reason to restrict marriage to husband-wife mating couples. Are there good reasons?
