Why do people believe that atheists (or non-believers of a certain religion) are not forever loved by God?

Love is nothing more than part of our genetic makeup for survival. We make it more than it is. God, if he/she/it exists is no more love than it would be, hate. No emotion would be significant enough for something as great as a creator of the universe to even take notice. What I'm trying to say is love, for us is so strong an emotion, we think it must be connected to god. Its an illusion. You could just as well say god is intestinal gas if it meant as much to you as love does.
