Is God worshipped simply because of a fear of Hell....?

Think about it. You probably know about the Fundamentalists who always rant about how people will go to eternal punishment in Hell, thus to pass God's mercy and judgement and avoid Hell we must become good and virtuous. So, if goodness, mercy, virtue and justice are practised simply because of a fear of eternal punishment, not for goodness, mercy, virtue and justice simply for their own sakes, then does that mean we are good simply because we are fearful, not because we are "good"? It's not good, it's merciless brainwashing.
