I walked my boyfriend home and while i was walking back home i had to beat off?

a dog with a stick who was aggressive to me...now the owner wants me to pay over a thousand dollars to treat the dog for the merciless beating he recieved ...do you think im liable? i sure as heck dont...thank you for any input..
